Abstract
This chapter seeks evidence of palaeoenvironmental change to inform on the role of people in environmental dynamics. The focus is on Badu, one of the mid-point islands of Torres Strait, located halfway between New Guinea and mainland Australia. The Holocene material record - the vegetation record and burning history - is examined, as evidence of degrees of human interaction and manipulation of the environment, to better understand people-land relations, including horticultural and hunter-gatherer relations.
