Community approach to geriatric mental health in India: growing need for capacity building

[Extract] India, a nation with the second largest population in the world with a population of 1.22 billion (India's Population, 2012). is a country of enormous diversity not just in terms of culture but also standard of living, technological sophistication, extent of coverage of government programs, urbanization and industrialization and the quality of service sector. There are striking contrasts among different states, regions and even within each state with reference to quality of life, prevalence of morbidity and access to basic health care including mental health care. Even though India is characterized as one of the world's largest industrial nations, most of the negative characteristics of poor and developing countries arc found in India too. According to the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India (2011), the population is predominantly rural (68.84%) and one-third of India's population (roughly equivalent to the entire population of the United States) lives below the poverty line. India being home to one-third of the world's poor people (Wikipedia). Besides, there is a continuous migration of rural people into urban slums creating major health and economic problems.
