Fossil pharyngognath fishes from Monte Bolca, Italy, with a description of a new pomacentrid genus and species
Journal Publication ResearchOnline@JCUBellwood, David R.
Abstract
The status of pharyngognath fishes from Monte Bolca is reviewed. The Labroidei, as currently defined, is represented by six genera: Eocoris and Phyllopharyngodon in the Labridae; Palaeopomacentrus in the Pomacentridae: Tortonesia in the Tortonesidae; Sorbinia incertae sedis. Labrus? valenciennesi is an indeterminate pharyngognath, whilst Odonteobolca (Odonteus), Gillidea, and Eolabroides are of uncertain affinity but appear to be non-pharyngognath. In addition, a new genus and species, Lorenzichthys olihan (Teleostei: Pomacentridae), is described from the lower Middle Eocene of Monte Bolca, Italy.
