Abstract

Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame, an adaptation of Victor Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris, is compared to earlier film versions, and to Hugo's novel. The analysis is particularly attentive to the portrayal of Quasi, the hunchback, Esmeralda, the gypsy, and the medieval setting of the story, especially with respect to the codes of animated feature film and burlesque comedy that are typical of Disney media.
