Profiling the Deterioration Risk Factors of Patients Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus on a Diabetes Specialist Outpatient Waiting List (Old ID 28982)

Patients seeking specialist advice from a specialist outpatient department require a referral from their general practitioner to access services. This research explores the time taken for patients to deteriorate if waitlisted in the order of date accepted for their referral compared to rates of deterioration for patients if the accepted referral was waitlisted in order of the patient’s individual risk of deterioration. Stage 1 focuses on identifying patient centric factors within a type 2 diabetes mellitus cohort which lead a patient to deteriorate on a waitlist. Stage 2 involves developing and implementing a framework to support the reconfiguration of waitlist management.
Social Psychology in Mental Health Studies: Showcase of Postgraduate Research in the Asia-Pacific Region

We intend to invite 15-20 postgraduate students and 8-10 academics (including early- and mid-career researchers and senior academics) to join this Asian Association of Social Psychology's (AASP) Small Group Meeting (SGM). The SGM aims to: 1) showcase the achievements of our next generation of social psychology researchers who are working on research in the intersection between social psychology and mental health via research presentations and Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition; 2) Organise a “Research Capacity Building Workshop”; 3) support research students in the Asia-Pacific region to publish papers in this research field via the “Conversations with Editors”; 4) inspire research students via “‘What Next’ Dialogues with Academics”; and 5) promote AASP among research students in Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand.

Nurses are often the initial provider of treatment and care to persons who self-harm. However, research suggests that the attitudes and perceptions of nurses towards people who self-harm is quite negative. This project aims to investigate and understand the experiences of nurses at Cairns Hospital who have treated persons that have self-harmed to inform the development of a potential future education intervention.

Caring in nursing. Caring is a fundamental concept in healthcare and thus deeply ingrained in the thoughts and actions of nurses. However, caring within modern health systems is fraught with challenges. The complex clinical environment is fast paced and demanding, and caregivers must balance completing tasks amidst time pressures and heavy workloads while attempting to keep up with practice changes such as new skills, treatments, and technologies. This project looks at the complexity of nursing care for people with both mental and terminal illness and what innovative care models could be developed. The project aim is to create a collective narrative of care and caring. This objective will include a variety of activities that culminate in a collective narrative - a co-developed story of care and caring.
