Biography
Samuel is a coral reef ecologist working across temporal and spatial scales. He is from Singapore where he did his undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies and worked on sea stars. For his PhD, he worked on characterising local and regional reefs across East Asia using multidisciplinary approaches. He worked with the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network East Asia to produce the status and trends of regional reefs to action more detailed taxonomic resolution in monitoring efforts. He also looked at longer term compositional data to showcase differentiated changes in taxonomic, phylogenetic and trait-based functional metrics through time, in addition to contrasting those changes against historical reef compositions through cores to establish a better baseline understanding of how reefs have changed in Singapore. He is currently working as a monitoring data analyst with the ReefCloud platform at AIMS.
