Biography
I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy. My project will develop a comprehensive molecular surveillance framework for bat-associated pathogens by integrating ectoparasite vector analysis with environmental DNA (eDNA) detection methods. The research will combine morphological and genomic analysis of bat flies (Nycteribiidae) with innovative eDNA sampling from air and water samples near bat roost sites, as well as direct biological samples, including bat urine and guano. This multi-matrix approach will enable the detection of viral, bacterial and parasitic pathogens within ectoparasite vectors, while simultaneously examining pathogen loads in the broader environmental context in which bats interact with their ecosystem. By correlating pathogen presence across multiple detection matrices, this research aims to address critical gaps in our understanding of pathogen transmission dynamics and establish standardised protocols for non-invasive surveillance of zoonotic diseases in bat populations.
