Biography

Maxine is a highly experienced political scientist and policy analyst with over a decade of expertise in environmental policy, focusing on ocean governance and the Great Barrier Reef. As a leader in environmental advocacy, Maxine has made significant contributions to the field of ocean governance and the blue humanities and has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and public engagement.

Notable roles
  • Original member and then co-lead on the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Regulatory subprogram, developing large-scale strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Lead author of the 2022 Scientific Consensus Statement on Reef water quality, and question 1.1. the Scientific Consensus Statement, providing comprehensive analysis of Reef values and offering scientific advice to government projects.
  • Director and Founder of the Blue Humanities Lab, promoting innovative research on the interplay between humans and water, and co-author of the first book to look at the Australian Blue Humanities

Environmental Policy and Advocacy:

  • Extensive experience in developing and implementing environmental policies, particularly in ocean governance and the protection of the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Author of "The Environmental Politics of the Great Barrier Reef," a comprehensive examination of the political dynamics affecting this crucial ecosystem.

  • Advisor to the Australian federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment, and Water on the Coral Sea Marine Park Advisory Group.
  • Consultant to the United Nations Environment Program projects, including developing a roadmap for global coral restoration regulations and foresight mapping for environmental improvements.
  • Consultant to the UNEP WCMC ICRI Ad hoc coral reef restoration committee
  • Advisor to the Queensland Department of Environment and Science on various environmental projects.

Media and Public Engagement:

  • Expert in analyzing media narratives and their impact on environmental policy, with a focus on combating climate change misinformation.
  • Regular political commentator with a weekly slot on ABC North Queensland, and contributions to major international media outlets like CNN, BBC, The Ecologist and Economist, and all major Australian news outlets.
