Biography
Professor Felecia Watkin Lui is a Torres Strait Islander academic with giz from Erub and Mabuiag. She is a current ARC Future Fellow (2026–2030) at JCU, leading the project Anchored to Place? Torres Strait Islander Mobility amidst Climate Change.
A recognised leader in Torres Strait research, Professor Watkin Lui’s work examines the intersections of health, environment, mobility and Indigenous futures. Drawing on her position at a regional university, she has focused her research on the distinctive challenges and opportunities of tropical environments, which are becoming increasingly critical in the context of global climate change. Her work also addresses research impact, benefit and knowledge translation, with a strong emphasis on co-design, Indigenous leadership and respectful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations.
She is a Chief Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF; 2024–2031); the NHMRC-funded National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Researchers Network, OCHRe (2022–2027); and the ARC Discovery Indigenous project Navigating the Tides of Change: A Study of Political Action and Change in the Torres Strait (IN250100037; 2025–2030).
