Biography
Andrew Calcino is a lecturer in bioinformatics and a member of Prof Matt Field's team, which uses bioinformatics to address a range of issues pertaining to human health, through the lens of genetic variation.
Andrew's current research focus is on the development of single cell sequencing data analysis pathways for determining the cellular and genetic impacts of various autoimmune diseases. He also uses a range of technologies for identifying structural variants that may be implicated in disease. In addition to his research, Andrew is the course coordinator for the second year bioinformatics subject, "Decoding DNA" which will be offered for the first time in trimester 2025.
Andrew completed his PhD at the University of Queensland under the supervision of Prof Bernie Degnan where he studied the early origins of the metazoan small interfering RNA pathways (miRNAs, piRNAs and endo-siRNAs). Following this he accepted a position at the University of Vienna, Austria, under the supervision of Univ.-Prof. DDr. Andreas Wanninger where he worked on the evolutionary genomics of molluscs with a focus on the origins and impacts of large genomic structural variations. Andrew commenced his position at JCU in 2022 and is fascinated by genetic variation and its role in both evolution and human disease.
