Abstract

Provision of needs-oriented care to society’s vulnerable and marginalised populations, particularly the homeless dependent on emergency sheltering, is intricately linked to the competencies of the personnel involved. Existing literature predominantly addresses the care and housing of homeless individuals within Anglophone and German-speaking contexts, while research focusing on the professional qualifications of emergency shelter staff remains scant. This international comparative study investigates the perspectives and experiences of staff engaged in working with homeless populations in Germany and Australia, concerning their professionalisation and competency levels in emergency accommodation environments. Central to this investigation is the question of necessary proficiencies and professional development for staff within the framework of professionalisation in dealing with homeless individuals in emergency shelters across the two nations.
