Seagrass Resources of Wuthathi Karakara (Sea Country) in Cape York: Report on 2024 surveys

Seagrasses hold significant cultural and wellbeing value for the Wuthathi people, as recognized in the Wuthathi Indigenous Protected Area and Healthy Country Plans (2023). To effectively plan and manage seagrass resources, it is crucial to determine the distribution, extent and abundance of seagrass, as well as to establish representative monitoring. Prior to this project, seagrass extent data was over two decades old from scientific expeditions between 1984 and 2001. Therefore, there was a need to re-survey these areas, and conduct baseline surveys in priority areas of Wuthathi Karakara (Sea Country) that have never been examined previously.
