La documentación de las lenguas indígenas del Paraguay en el marco del Decenio Internacional de las Lenguas Indígenas / Documentation of the indigenous languages of Paraguay within the framework of the International Decade of the World's Indigenous Languages

This brief contribution summarizes some of the topics discussed during the opening conference of the V Jornadas de Lengua y Literatura held at the Universidad Nacional de Itapúa in 2023. After having given a brief overview of endangered languages (§1), it will discuss the linguistic extinction that occurred in Paraguay in the past (§2) and reflect on the reasons why it is necessary to document (and if possible revitalize) indigenous languages (§3), in particular, it will show what we lose with the disappearance of a language and the advantages for the communities that maintain their traditional language.
