XConfessions: A case study of digital crowdsourcing and transnational community-building in feminist pornography

[Extract] XConfessions is a porn site with a difference. The pornography it sells and, sometimes, makes available for free, is “ethical” in that it treats performers fairly and pays them properly, the representations in the films are sex-positive, intersectional feminist, diverse, and anti-misogynist. They are shot beautifully and are high quality productions. The film crews are mostly if not completely constituted by folk who identify as women, which often means that sets are safe and professional places for the performers to work, rather than exploitative, abusive, or dangerous. Erika Lust—the creator of the site—articulates her project as an ethical and feminist one, aimed at creating erotica that foregrounds female desire and is made primarily by and for women. Apart from the ethical production of the content, the site also has a transmedia twist to it, and I’m interested in this innovation. The films are, in several ways, user generated or crowdsourced
