Opportunities and Challenges in the Coral Triangle

[Extract] The Coral Triangle (CT) is considered the global hotspot for marine biodiversity in the world. The region includes the seas of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste (collectively known as the CT6). The CT is a major source of seafood-derived protein and micronutrients for the CT6 and other countries, directly providing food and livelihood for a third of the regional population. However, a high level of social and ecological impacts, further elevated by climate change, threatens the coral reefs and fisheries of the CT. Consequently, the derived resources and ecosystem services, as well as the food security of its people, are also affected.
