The Australian Oaten Hay Use for Sustainable Dairy Production
Conference Contribution ResearchOnline@JCUThe export fodder industry is one of the important agricultural sectors in Australia. Due to the stable, high-quality fodder, more than $500 million in fodder has been exported to the global market (AgriFutures, 2022). Australian oaten hay is one of the major fodders exported to oversea markets, such as Japan, Korea, China and the United Arab Emirates. Previous research believed that oaten hay could be one of the ingredients in the total mixed ration diet to increase the dry matter intake of dairy cattle (calves, dry cow, and lactating cow) (Li et al., 2020; Wu, 2018; Zhao et al., 2021). However, the results in DMI, milk yield, milk quality, nitrogen metabolism and animal health are inconsistent (Valizaheh et al., 2008). Research on the oaten hay has been restricted mainly by inconsistent use of oaten hay in qualities, quantities and complementary forages. It is not well explained how to use Australian oaten hay fodder in total mixed ration diet to achieve sustainable dairy production
