Ticks and tick-borne infections in Asia: Implications for travellers

Abstract

[Extract] This issue of Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease has a focus on diseases spread by ticks. We would like to put a spotlight on tick-borne infections in Asia as they follow an interesting geographical distribution, constitute a mixture of emerging and re-emerging diseases and have been receiving more attention recently. It is likely that there will be increased and improved detection of these, often easily-treatable and/or preventable, diseases due to heightened awareness of medical staff in endemic regions and travel medicine practitioners worldwide. In the context of travel medicine, tick-borne diseases require the specific assessment of the traveller's potential exposure risk, such as camping, trekking or animal contact, as tick-bites may go unnoticed and clinical presentations may be unspecific.
