Examining listener perceptions of a parenting podcast series
Conference Contribution ResearchOnline@JCUBackground: The transition to parenthood for first-time mothers can be characterised by psychological distress, which can result from inadequate support during the perinatal period. Limited accessibility to support in rural and remote areas means that it is imperative we provide accessible, online resources to new parents. To this end, the BAMBOO WebApp will pair new mums with peer mentors and provide a digital resource centre, which contains a podcast series covering topics relating to self-care, infant care, and relationships. This research examines listeners’ responses to, and opinions of, the podcast series. Method: Focus groups were conducted to examine podcast listeners’ opinions and suggestions pertaining to the podcast series’ purpose, applicability, and content. Additionally, group discussion focused on listeners’ intentions to continue engaging with the podcast and how they may have reflected on, or incorporated, information from the podcast into their parenting and well-being practices. Results: Data collection is currently underway. Case study results will be presented, focusing on those pertaining to applicability and usability of the podcast as a tool to support parenting and perinatal maternal well-being. Discussion of the findings will also address how the dissemination of health information to new mothers via podcasts can be optimized. Conclusions: The project findings have broad implications concerning the impact that a podcast series within a WebApp can have on supporting maternal well-being. Additionally, findings regarding the process of translating research findings into engaging, public-facing edutainment have implications for how to better produce health education materials.
