Abstract

The Whitsunday region of the Queensland coast encompasses numerous islands, bays, and inshore reefs, and is an important gateway to the outer Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Of concern in the region is an apparent decline in water quality, as demonstrated in water quality monitoring results (Gruber et al., 2019; Moran et al., 2023; Waterhouse et al., 2017) and supported by anecdotal evidence from local residents and tourism operators. For example, the long-term water quality index produced by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authorities (GBRMPA) marine monitoring program (MMP) for the Whitsundays region was in decline for a number of years since monitoring started in 2007, although the water quality index has improved from ‘poor’ to ‘moderate’ since 2019.
