Book review of “Performing Copyright” by Luke McDonagh, London, UK, Bloomsbury Publishers, 2021. ISBN 9781509927043
Journal Contribution ResearchOnline@JCUPerforming Copyright takes a qualitative empirical approach to explore the issues of authorship and ownership in theatrical works through the lens of copyright law and performance studies. The author has conducted empirical research in addition to a theoretical assessment of the relationship between different "creative collaborators" involved in the process of creating dramatic works in the field of theatre. In the first chapter of the book itself on p.3, the author acknowledges the jurisdictional limitations of the empirical research to be limited to "UK-based participants". However, there is a fair attempt to broaden the relevance by using case laws from several common law jurisdictions including the US, Canada, Australia, Ireland and India.
