Successful Creation of a Photogrammetric Model of the James Matthews (1841) Wrecksite from Legacy Photography

Abstract

The availability of a detailed digital 3D model of a shipwreck site can aid significantly in the archaeological analysis of that site. The availability of photogrammetric 3D reconstruction processing software has revolutionised the process of creating such 3D models, however the use of this advanced technique with legacy photographic datasets - datasets that were collected well prior to the widespread availability of this software - is unproven and often presents additional challenges because the photography was not captured with the same level of overlap and image density as those captured nowadays for photogrammetric purposes. This paper explores the detailed processing steps that were required to successfully create a digital 3D model of the wreck of James Matthews using the photographic data captured during the 1975-76 underwater excavation survey. The article discusses the workflows developed and presents a detailed 3D model of the James Matthews shipwreck site generated using Agisoft Metashape software.
