Abstract

This chapter reviews the development of the tourism industry in Indonesia. It focuses on four aspects. The first section describes the current state of Indonesia’s tourism industry. This includes documenting the growth of tourist arrivals, the roles of tourism as the country’s economic generator, and tourism competitiveness. The second part focuses on the government initiatives to boost tourism, including the proposal for the 10 New “Bali” destinations. The third component discusses tourism sustainability programs which comprise three strategic initiatives: sustainability tourism destinations (STD), sustainable tourism observatory (STO), and sustainable tourism certification (STC). The fourth facet portrays Indonesia as a halal destination. In a final section, the future direction of Indonesia tourism is considered. Data were gathered through secondary information obtained from the government reports, documents produced by national and international organizations, media/news, and other relevant papers
