A proposed nomenclature and framework of emotional labor
Journal Contribution ResearchOnline@JCUEmotional labor is an important phenomenon of study in the field of industrial and organizational psychology as it is known to affect a myriad of organizationally-relevant outcomes such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment. However, researchers examining the process of emotional labor have yet to agree upon a single, common framework and nomenclature. This has resulted in inconsistent terminology usage and the generation of piecemeal findings, precluding us from obtaining a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the phenomenon at hand. By considering the existing literature on emotion regulation, reconciling discrepant terminology usage, and integrating existing findings, a general framework is proposed wherein both past and future findings may be mapped upon. The development of this framework would potentially allow us to obtain a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of emotional labor, as well as to better inform practitioners with regards to the intricate processes involved in emotional labor; thereby bearing implications for both research and practice in this area.
