Book review of "Nature Study and Environmental Concern: a history of school nature study in Australia" by D.Kass. London, UK, Routledge, 2017. ISBN: 978-1-1386-505-1
Journal Contribution ResearchOnline@JCU[Extract] Dorothy Kass's book is a welcome addition to the history of both environmental attitudes and educational reform in Australia. Its primary focus – nature study in schools in the early twentieth century – is a topic few Australian historians have noticed, let alone scrutinised closely as this book does. Indeed, with a few notable exceptions, the shaping of environmental attitudes in turn-of-the-twentieth-century Australia is a field seldom visited by historians in this country. In this, it contrasts sharply with the United States of America where the environmentalism of the Progressive Era has long attracted historians' interest.
