Environmental stewardship education in the Anthropocene: what have we learned from recent research in North Queensland schools adjacent to the Wet Tropics?

This paper reports on a recent doctoral study on environmental stewardship education conducted at James Cook University, Cairns. Year 10 teachers and their teachers in high schools located close to the Wet Tropics designated World Heritage Area were surveyed and interviewed. Key education documents were analysed for their promotion (or otherwise) of stewardship education. The reason for this research was simple. We share the concerns of eminent scientific researchers that humans are changing the Earth. The now issue in Australian social and civic education is the development of curriculum and pedagogy to prepare current students at school for the future they will face.
