The Fronton: a Basque legacy in tropical North Queensland

Abstract

[Extract] On Saturday afternoon Novermber 28, 1959, a fronton (handball court) was opened with considerable fanfare in Trebonne, a small township, eight kilometres (five miles), west of Ingham in the Herbert River district of North Queensland, Australia. The occasion attracted a large crowe. Mr "Jack" Williams, solicitor, opened the court and Reverend Father Tomas Ormazabal, travelling Chaplin for the Spanish community of North Queensland, dedicated it. (1) Today the fronton stands unused, generally ignored and attracting only occasional interest from locals and tourists. Yet it is a solitary remaining monument to mark the small but significant migration of Basque people to North Queensland.
