Abstract
[Extract] A major achievement, the Australian Encyclopaedia was a mixed blessing for its talented editor-and-chief, Alec Chisholm. In the Age of Wikipedia, it might be difficult to understand the excitement that greeted the publication of a new, 10-volume Australian Encyclopaedia in 1958. Newspapers around the nation published glowing reviews that extolled the encyclopaedia not only as an indispensable reference work but also as a marker of Australia's cultural maturity. The Commonwealth News and Information Bureau hailed its appearnace as an event 'comparable in importance with some of the country's greatest developmental public works'.
