[Extract] Mary Bennett was both a humanitarian and a human rights campaigner. From the 1920s until her death in 1961, she was an outspoken advocate of legal reform in the Aboriginal domain and moral reform of the wider Australian society. She persistently accused Western Australia in particular, and Australian governments more generally, of abetting the enslavement of Aboriginal people. Equally persistently, she condemned the removal of Aboriginal children from their families and exhorted her fellow Australians to recognise "the Australian Aboriginal as a Human Being", as the title of her 1930 polemic proclaimed. In Alison Holland, Bennett has found a subtle and sympathetic biographer.
