Between Battles: commemorating the cultural lives of soldiers

Abstract

This exhibition explored the cultural lives of soldiers, a topic that permeated every aspect of soldiers' experiences of the First World War but that is rarely commemorated. The exhibition revealed that a wide range of cultural activities were undertaken by soldiers including reading, writing (both personal and for publication), musical performances, craft, and experiences of travel. Kind assistance from the family of Astley James Bromfield allowed the exhibition to include items from the family's collection and to explore a North Queensland soldier's experiences of the War. The exhibition drew on significant original research conducted using the resources of Special Collections at the James Cook University Library. It presented items held by that library, items from the 4RAA Museum Collection, and material generously loaned by the family of Astley James Bromfield.
