Abstract

[Extract] Bottoms' book advances two arguments. One is that the colonisation of Queensland was extraordinarily violent, littered with massacres of Aboriginal people. The other is that the violence has been - and remains today - veiled behind a conspiracy of silence. The first argument gets by far the most words, including great chunks of quoted testimony by colonial Queenslanders acknowledging the atrocities inflicted upon Aboriginal people. Continually replaying the noise generated by frontier violence, Bottoms has difficulty sustaining his second argument about the imposition of silence.
