• The guidelines from the Swedish Medical Products Agency regarding management of patients in ambulatory care with a sore throat updated 2012 provides good guidance and safety. • The vast majority of patients with a serious invasive infection caused by group A beta-haemolytic streptococci are not preceded by a doctor visit for an uncomplicated sore throat. • An ambulatory patient showing signs of a potential invasive infection should immediately be referred to a hospital.
