Moving grounded theory into the 21st century: part 2 - mapping the footprints

Grounded theory has the potential to inform nursing knowledge, education and practice through an interpretive rendering of theory that facilitates an understanding of phenomena in the context in which it exists. In order to harness this potential to fullest effect, nurse researchers are challenged to possess significant undersanding of grounded theory, enabling them to contribute to its continued development as a methodology of consequence for knowledge generation in and of nursing practice. In part one of this series, the origins and evolution of grounded theory were discussed from Glaserian, Strassian and Constructivists perspectives. This second article maps the methodological principles and procedures that characterise grounded theory within the confines of these evolutionary influences.
