Abstract

In this concluding chapter to the Handbook, we identify current directions in, and future challenges and opportunities for environmental education research. We begin by tracing some of the broader and critical changes in society, particularly the influence of information and communication technologies. We then examine the implications for future directions for research on learning and Jiving sustainably in times of accelerating and continuous change, and increasing complexity, risk, and uncertainty. We suggest three tentative directions for consideration by researchers: (i) connecting biophilia and videophilia, (ii) creating spaces for hybrid learning, and (iii) strengthening engaged scholarship with a planetary conscience.
