Education for eco-social justice: a case study of a partnership approach in Indian schools

In November 2011 the De Novo '11 conference was held in Kerala, India, with the theme of 'Eco-Social Justice: Issues, Challenges and Ways Forward'. Papers presented at the conference addressed a wide array of issues relating to eco-social justice, with a number emphasising the importance of education as a tool for achieving an ecologically and socially just society. The conference, itself organised as part of a partnership between James Cook University in Australia and the De Paul Institute of Science and Technology, India, also heard from several speakers about the importance of partnerships as a pathway to such outcomes. This paper presents a case study of an educational partnership designed to promote eco-social outcomes in a Kerelan High School. As part of a broader programme called SEED (Student Empowerment for Environmental Development) the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana High School engaged in a partnership with a number of stakeholders, including the police, media, and NGOs to produce a range of positive environmental outcomes. The paper details these outcomes and reflects on the lessons that can be learnt from this case study for eco-socially oriented practice in both India and Australia.
