Book Review of "Throwing off the cloak: reclaiming self-reliance in Torres Strait" by Elizabeth Osborne, Aboriginal Studies Press, Canberra
Journal Contribution ResearchOnline@JCUMcGregor, Russell
Abstract
Despite the prominence of one Torres Strait Islander name - Mabo – in contemporary Australian political discourse, the history of the Islanders as a distinct indigenous group remains little known outside a close circle of specialists. This book seeks to redress that neglect, showing how Torres Strait Islanders have long been involved in a struggle for recognition and autonomy in ways akin to, yet different from, those pursued by the Aboriginal peoples of the mainland.
