First Nations student to complete a PhD, investigating the possibility of designing a model to keep First Nations lecturers, teachers and consultants safe when they are teaching First Nations studies, Cultural awareness, Cultural safety and cultural intelligence. For years, we have been trying to educate non-First Nations peoples about our history, our ways of knowing, being and doing, and how to create and maintain culturally inclusive spaces, and we have been subjected to some horrendous comments and attitudes. There is currently no model for us to tap into to debrief and look after our mental health. We are expected to ‘just get on with it’ even though we have been confronted with racist, hateful comments about our people, ancestors and way of life. We need to change the discourse on how First Nations people are expected to educate non-First Nations people about historical, political, economic, sociological, psychological, and spiritual events that have impacted us since colonisation. We deserve to have our mental, cultural and spiritual selves kept safe.
