- This project tackles the growing digital divide in Australian healthcare by delivering a secure, scalable, and privacy-preserving mental health solution tailored to the connectivity and resource constraints of regional, rural, and remote (RRR) communities. The proposed system—FLARE (Federated Learning for AI-Based RRR Engagement)—will use federated learning, passive sensing, and on-device AI to enable adaptive, privacy-preserving screening, diagnosis, and support for mental health, via smartphones and smartwatches. FLARE is designed to reduce barriers to care, stigma, and service access in the underserved regions JCU is committed to.
