Iyke Emeto

Associate Professor Theophilus I. Emeto, PhD James Cook University, MBiostatistics The University of Queensland, MSc (Distinction) University of Nottingham, CStat, FIMC, CMC, CMS is a Chartered Biostatistician registered with the Royal Statistical Society, and the Team Leader of the Public Health and Tropical Medicine Research Methods Group (PHTMRMG). He is also a key member of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Vector-borne and Neglected Tropical Diseases .

Biography

He completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Medical Physiology from the University of Calabar, where he defined prediction formulae for lung function parameters in Nigerian children aged 6 to 16 years. He graduated with Distinction in MSc Immunology and Allergy from the University of Nottingham, UK in 2007 where he investigated the effect of the Major House Dust Mite allergen Der p 1 on T-regulatory and Th17 cells in allergic asthma. He completed his MBiostatistics from the The University of Queensland, and the Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia where he worked on a project assessing the exploratory and analytical methods employed in longitudinal clinical trials with incomplete primary outcome data. He completed his PhD focused on understanding the mechanism underpinning the pathology of the weakening human aorta, and the development of a drug-based therapy for abdominal aortic aneurysm at James Cook University in 2013. Previously, he worked as a Research Scientist on various clinical trials analysing cellular and humoral immune response of patients treated with the therapeutic cancer vaccine TroVax® (MVA-5T4) with Oxford BioMedica UK, and as a Research Assistant on projects employing combined immunotherapy and chemotherapy for neuroblastoma at the world class Tenovus Research Laboratories, University of Southampton, UK.

Teaching and Research Activities

Iyke leads PHTMRMG in providing the coordination and teaching of undergraduate research methods subjects (HS2402 & HS2405/3401) and postgraduate subjects (TM5506, TM5515, TM5516, TM5527, TM5549 and TM5310). He leads the PHTMRMG in providing research support for staff and students within the Academy, and to clinicians within the Far North Hospital and Health services including The Townsville University Hospital. The area of support includes quantitative research project design, advice on ethics, grants, statistical analysis, and interpretation, and writing towards publications.

Iyke believes we have a place for quality research, and we need to equip people to do excellent research, conducted slowly but rigorously, with a motivation to improve livelihood not just for some or for one, but for all. Iyke shares this conviction with his team and ultimately aims to spread this message. Putting it another way, Iyke would rather be the flat bass two in a choir rendition of Faure’s requiem in D minor than the lead singer in a popular boy’s band.

Iyke provides high level statistical analytical expertise on several projects and engages in and support a diverse range of research projects. He is also passionate about applying public health principles in the detection, diagnosis, monitoring, therapy and management of chronic inflammatory diseases, haematological and oncological malignancies, and health determinants in deprived communities.

More recently Iyke has been working on the best methods to deal with truncation of primary outcome data in longitudinal studies.

Collaborations and Capacity Building

He actively engages in research capacity building within the ASIA Pacific region and work as a key mentor within The JCU/UPNG Twinning project, and the Tropical Partners providing research support and capacity building to colleagues in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.

He collaborate nationally with colleagues from the University of Queensland, Charles Sturt University, Federation University, Edith Cowen University, University of Melbourne, University of Syndey, and Central Queensland University. Internationally, he collaborates with the University of Cambridge (UK), Institute of Epidemiology (Germany), University of Houston College of Pharmacy (USA), Medical University of South Carolina (USA), University of Auckland (NZ), Massey University (NZ), Landmark University (Nigeria), University of Lagos (Nigeria), and the University of Papua New Guinea.

Other Academic Service and Engagement Activities

Iyke has been an Equity Contact Officer (ECO) at JCU since it's inception. He is also an Associate Editor, Frontiers in Epidemiology, Biostatistical Editor, Therapeutic Advances in Infectious Disease, Guest Associate Editor Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine (Atherosclerosis & Vascular Medicine Section), and Frontiers in Public Health ,Special Topic Guest Editor, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, and Therapeutic Advances in Infectious Disease, and a reviewer for several journals, Emeto Publons.
