Biography
Associate Professor Nichole (Nikki) Harvey is an experienced academic with an extensive and well-regarded teaching portfolio. Over her career, she has consistently achieved student satisfaction ratings in the top 10% (outstanding range) and has been recognised with a James Cook University Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning and an Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Australian Award for University Teaching. She is also co-author of two leading national foundational nursing textbooks.
With more than two decades of academic experience, A/Prof Harvey has taught nursing, midwifery, medical, and allied health students across a variety of delivery modes, including face-to-face, online, blended, and intensive residential schools. She currently teaches clinical skills to medical students from Years 1–5, primarily in simulated environments.
She has held several key leadership positions, including Academic Lead, Clinical Skills (Medicine), and previously Director of Undergraduate Studies for both the Bachelor of Nursing Sciences and Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery programs. She has also served as course and subject coordinator, curriculum coordinator, and academic advisor. A core strength of her work is building strong collaborations with clinicians and industry partners to enhance student learning while supporting improved patient outcomes. To maintain these links and her own clinical expertise, she actively contributes to community groups, working parties, and clinical practice where possible.
A/Prof Harvey completed her PhD in 2012 and is committed to research capacity building. She mentors early-career researchers, advises Higher Degree Research (HDR) and Honours students across the College of Medicine and Dentistry and the Discipline of Nursing and Midwifery, and provides peer support across the research process. Her research portfolio continues to expand, encompassing co-author of two teaching textbooks, 45 book chapters, numerous refereed journal articles, and national and international conference presentations. She also serves as a peer reviewer for several journals, sits on two National Blood Authority clinical reference groups, and acts as an examiner for HDR theses.
Research
Research Interests
My research interests centre on improving health outcomes through equitable access to maternity care and innovative approaches to education. I have a strong commitment to exploring access to maternity services, with a particular focus on the challenges faced by women in rural and remote communities. This work seeks to highlight barriers, inform policy, and contribute to strategies that ensure safe, timely, and culturally appropriate care for all women, regardless of location.
Complementing this, I am interested in advancing teaching and learning through simulation and technology-enhanced approaches. I am particularly interested in immersive VR education and interdisciplinary education that fosters collaboration across health professions, better preparing students and practitioners for the realities of clinical practice. The translation of research into real-world clinical settings underpins my work, as I aim to bridge the gap between evidence and practice to support high-quality, patient-centred care.
Methodologically, my expertise lies in qualitative research, which allows me to capture the lived experiences of patients, students, and clinicians, and to generate insights that drive meaningful change in both education and practice.
