Biography
Dr Marie M'Balla-Ndi Oelgemoeller is an Associate Professor in Journalism at the University of Ottawa (Canada) and an adjunct senior lecturer and researcher in journalism at James Cook University. During her time at JCU, Marie headed the Bachelor of Arts and the Multimedia Journalism and Writing discipline in the College of Arts, Society and Education (CASE).
Marie has over a decade of experience as a foreign correspondent for various francophone and anglophone news media outlets and has completed a PhD in international Journalism and a Master of Journalismr espectively in 2014 and 2009 at The University of Queensland .
She has been teaching journalism and communication courses in Australia since 2009 and has been invited for journalism seminars and short courses in universities in diverse overseas institutions. In addition to her international education and career, Marie is fluent in three languages. She has published nationally and internationally about journalistic practice in a range of generalist disciplinary and interdisciplinary journals and books.
Her doctoral research examines the impact of socio-cultural and political issues, including traditional protocols and values, on contemporary journalism practice in the South Pacific region, with a focus on Vanuatu, Samoa and New Caledonia. Her current research interests lie in exploring exploring issues of globalisation, culture, and diversity as well as their implications, for journalistic practice in both Western and non-Western contexts.
In addition to her media and communication background at a postgraduate level, Marie also has expertise and interests in the Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, and Teaching and Learning Innovation scholarship.

- Enhancing the Bachelor of Arts Degree with a focus on work-readiness and employability through internships and placements in the capstone.
- Recipient of a New Colombo Plan initiative, which will allow 20 JCU students to participate in an exchange with the National University of Samoa in 2016 and 2017. Please, get in touch if you are a JCU BA student interested in studying a semester at NUS in Samoa.
- Co-investigator in a research project documenting 150 years of Townsville history through the eyes of the media (in partnership with the Townsville Museum of Tropical Queensland, the Townsville Bulletin and supported by the Townsville City Council).
- Investigator in a project examining issues of bullying and cyberbullying in higher education and promoting online safety.
- Co-investigator in a project promoting the production of sustainable insect repellent made from native plants in New Caledonia with Associate Professor Michael Oelgemoeller and colleagues at the University of New Caledonia. Her role in this project focuses on the media outreach strategy and the design of educational resources promoting the use of sustainable means to fight insect-borne diseases in tropical regions.
Marie is interested in collaborative projects with researchers from institutions worldwide, as well as in the supervision of research students willing to complete higher research degrees in the fields of media, communication, humanities, arts, and governance.
