Biography

Julie Parison has been working in the field of health care research since 2000. She currently lectures and teaches into subjects for qualitative research methods (HS2402, HS2405/3401), and social science in public health (TM5506).

Her academic training encompasses the disciplines of the sociology and anthropology of health and the new public health.   Julie has a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons.) majoring in the sociology of health and illness.  In 2012, she completed a Graduate Certificate of Education (Tertiary Teaching) and in 2015 Julie was awarded a Master of Public Health (with Distinction).

Julie’s public health research interests include ecologically sustainable communities, in particular, active transport.   In collaboration with Associate Professor Richard Franklin and the Active Transport in the Tropics Network at James Cook University,    Julie is actively engaged in supporting the network to develop an action research agenda to achieve the aspirational goal of the Network “to make Townsville the safest, most active, eco-friendly transport city in Australia and the tropics by 2030”. In October, 2016 Julie was honoured for this foundational work with a Highly Commended TropEco Excellence Award – Staff. In 2017 the Network was highly commended in the Partnerships & Engagement sector of the TropEco Excellence Awards. If you wish to know more about the work of the Network please email Julie.

Julie has served as a human research ethics advisor for Public Health and Tropical Medicine since 2007.

Julie is available to support the supervision of Masters and PhD of Public Health students intending to conduct mixed methods research projects.
