Biography
Profile
Dr. Scarinci has over 25 years of teaching, research, and administrative experience in 5 countries on 3 continents. She has served as Professor, Department Chair and Director of a Hospitality and Tourism Institute in the United States. She also has over 11 years of hospitality and tourism industry experience in Florida, Sicily and Bermuda.
Research
She is passionate about the environmental-sustainable aspects of hospitality businesses in the tropics. She has partnered with colleagues in Singapore and Cairns to produce three studies on graduate employability skills in the tropics. The outcome of this research initiative has led to two peer reviewed book chapters and a peer reviewed abstract at the BEMA Conference in 2022. One book chapter was published by Sage Publiations in 2023 in the Sage Handbook for Graduate Employability. The second book chapter, A New WOrld during COVID-19: employabiity skills in tourism, hospitality and events, was published in 2022 with Apple Press in the Domestic Tourism and Hospitality Management: issues, scope and challenges amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Leadership
Janice began at JCU in 2018 as the Coordinator of the Masters of International Tourism, Hospitality Management at JCU. Upon her arrival, she was asked to lead the development of a new Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism, Hospitality and Events (BTHE) to be offered on three Campuses (Cairns, Brisbane and Singapore) . She developed partnerships with industry in Cairns and developed an Executive Mentorship Program which provided 100% job placement. Janice led the collaboration across all levels of the College, Division, recruitment, marketing, and engagement. Janice made a significant contribution to the organisational unit by participating as a facilitator of the Tourism and Hospitality Hackathon with industry professionals to develop the BTHE & MITHM curriculum. She also played a significant role within the discipline by being the principal investigator for over $120,000 in grants to develop international programs in Indonesia. As a result, Janice was awarded the highest honour by the University of Florida as a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 2020.
