    Biography

    Ethan Kane Waters completed his Electrical & Electronics Engineering Honours thesis at JCU in 2022, earning the CN Barton Medal for best thesis and runner-up for the best Electrical/Software Engineering thesis in Queensland. In 2023, he began working as a Research & Development Engineer at JCU and CSIRO, focusing on software systems and data processing pipelines for agriculture and marine science. Ethan was central to the development of a progressive web app to provide decision support for Crown-of-Thorns Starfish management and optimized geospatial data processing pipelines in R and Python, deployed on Azure. Currently, as Chief Investigator for the Sugar-AI project, he leads the development of machine learning algorithms and a prototype software system for diagnosing sugarcane disease with multispectral satellite Images. This offers large-scale diagnostics with significantly faster turnaround than traditional methods.
