Biography

David Plummer is a Professorial Research Fellow in Research Capacity Development, a joint appointment between Queensland Health and James Cook University. David holds a PhD in health sociology from the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at the Australian National University. He is a medical specialist with expertise in public health and health sociology. David has worked in the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Africa. Before working at JCU, he worked at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, where he specialized in health and international development. While there he was a co-investigator in a study of health systems strengthening in 5 African countries. Prior to that he held a Commonwealth/UNESCO Professorship at the University of the West Indies, where he worked in Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica and several other Caribbean countries. As part of that post he introduced a new Master’s Degree in Health Promotion and developed and led the Caribbean Masculinities Project, research which collected and analyzed data in 8 countries in South America and the Caribbean. He is also Adjunct Professor in Public Health at the University of Texas, Houston. In 2003, David was appointed Member of the Order of Australia for services to public and community health.
