Biography

Anna Wilson is an applied marine biologist and researcher, employed at James Cook University since 2015.

She currently leads the Red Algae Project within the ARC ITRH for Supercharging Tropical Aquaculture. Alongside this role, Anna is completing a part-time PhD focused on using genomic tools to identify and select superior strains of the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis, a species of growing commercial significance.

Anna’s expertise lies at the intersection of applied phycology, aquaculture, and biotechnology, with a strong emphasis on developing practical solutions to advance the domestication and cultivation of seaweeds. Her work aims to bridge fundamental science and industry application, supporting the sustainable expansion of tropical aquaculture through innovative strain selection, genetic resource management, and cultivation protocols.

She is an active member of the Australasian Society for Phycology and Aquatic Botany and contributes to national and regional networks advancing seaweed science and aquaculture innovation. Anna maintains a strong commitment to translational science, collaborative research, and supporting industry partners in developing practical pathways from laboratory research to large-scale production.
