Biography
Dr Amy Peden has extensive experience in drowning prevention research, policy and practice having authored more than 90 peer-reviewed articles and over 60 professional reports. Amy has significant practical experience in drowning prevention as the National Manager of Research and Policy at Royal Life Saving Society - Australia, a position she held for 7 years. During this time, Amy was a key contributor to the last three Australian Water Safety Strategies and was lead author of 10 National Drowning Reports.
Amy’s current position as Lecturer – Injury Prevention in the UNSW Sydney School of Public Health and Community Medicine is a combined research and teaching role. She is also co-lead of the Injury Prevention and Disaster Management research theme. Amy is a Senior Research Fellow with Royal Life Saving Society – Australia and an honorary fellow of the George Institute for Global Health. She also holds an adjunct appointment with the Health and Psychology Innovations lab at Griffith University. She sits on the executive committee of the Australasian Injury Prevention Network and is on the national organising comittee for the 2019 Australasian Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference and the Safety 2020 world conference.
Amy completed her PhD in 2019 in the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences at James Cook University, where her thesis entitled 'Building the evidence base for river drowning prevention', explored the epidemiology, risk factors and strategies for the prevention of unintentional river drowning, the leading location for drowning in Australia. Her PhD was awarded the Sax Institute Research Action Award in 2019 and was chosen as one of the recipients of the 2020 Dean's Award for Higher Degree by Research Excellence.
