Biography
Alex Meagan Dancyger is a Senior Lecturer in Dentistry at James Cook University with a background spanning dentistry, biomedical sciences, and education. She holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (JCU), a Master of Science in Medicine (Immunology and Infectious Diseases), a Bachelor of Education, and an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology from Canadian institutions.
Her academic work integrates clinical dentistry with research and teaching innovation. Alex develops and delivers curricula in prevention, dental materials, and oral health sciences, employing contemporary and student-centred teaching methods. She supervises and mentors dental students in both pre-clinical and clinical settings, ensuring alignment with professional standards and evidence-based practice.
Her research interests bridge oral health, biomedical science, and public health, with notable contributions to understanding malignant transformation of actinic cheilitis and immunological mechanisms of enzymatic activity. She has published in peer-reviewed journals, including J Investigative and Clinical Dentistry and FASEB Journal.
Alex has been awarded competitive funding, including the Keeping Women Safe from Violence Grant (2023), which supports the development of specialised training for dental professionals in recognising and responding to domestic violence. She continues to lead interdisciplinary projects that connect dentistry with broader health and social issues, strengthening the role of oral health professionals in community wellbeing.
