Biography
Professor Adrian Kuah occupies a distinctive dual-market position as both as full professor within James Cook University and an international standards and multilateral-program leader. He plays a leadership role within the global ISO circular-economy technical ecosystem and is deeply engaged in UN-linked initiatives and ASEAN-level policy processes across 13 developing Asian countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. His work has mobilized more than 100 experts from national governments, standards bodies, and industry to build capacity and accelerate sustainable transitions. Through this work, he contributes to shaping the standards and governance frameworks that guide how governments, industries, and institutions operationalize sustainability.
Within James Cook University, he serves as its first Professor of Strategy and Sustainability, leading the Circular Economy and Sustainability program across three campuses - Cairns, Singapore, Townsville - since 2017. He has been central to building institutional platforms that integrate research excellence with multilateral institutions such as ASEAN Secretariat, International Organization for Standardization, and United Nations Environment Programme in areas of standards leadership, policy engagement, and industry transitions. Several years ago, he was part of a team that helped JCU Singapore Business School in achieving its AACSB accreditation by facilitating Standards 2, 5, and 15. At JCU, he continues to play a key role in mentoring the next generation of researchers at JCU by supervising 6 doctoral candidates and coordinating capstone subjects on corporate strategy.
Professor Kuah's strategic external capital and institutional leverage extend well beyond traditional academic boundaries. At the Board level, he brings strengths in ESG and sustainability governance, international standards and assurance frameworks, government and multilateral engagement, and long-term strategic risk and opportunity oversight.
