Abstract

This chapter begins with a brief overview of the history of schema therapy and its influences. Key concepts of schema therapy, such as core emotional needs, early maladaptive schemas (EMS), coping styles, and modes, are described. In addition to explaining how these constructs contribute to the development of psychopathology, an overview of the extant literature on these constructs is also presented, offering evidence-based perspectives on the model underpinning schema therapy.
