Abstract

[Extract] Mitchell grass (Astrebla spp.) grasslands are a critically important bioregion of Australia, covering approximately 47 million hectares (14% of Queensland and 6% of Australia). These grasslands support a nationally significant livestock industry, while providing important forage and refuge for native wildlife. The ecological health and productive capacity of Mitchell grasslands in many areas is however threatened by a range or pressures including, but not limited to, the occurrence of extreme climatic events (e.g., floods and droughts), the incursion of exotic weeds and feral animals, and sustained overgrazing. The prevention of pasture and land degradation in response to these pressures, and remediation of already degraded areas, requires tools for actively monitoring the condition of Mitchell grasslands to assist in informed decision-making.
